I have known Dave de Beer for 20 years, when he arrived in Hermanus from Johannesburg. He was eager to familiarise himself with the Overberg bird scene. He became a member of BirdLife Overberg, and enthusiastically participated in all the activities that took place around birds and birding. He was also heavily involved in the social life that goes along with club events and post outing list comparisons. He is passionate and knowledgeable about all aspects of nature, a quality that hasn’t waned in all the years I have known him. In fact, as time has gone on, his fascination with the Whales only gained momentum – he has published widely on this topic, illustrating his books with his exceptional photographs. He is a wonderful tour guide and I recommend novices, intermediaries and advanced bird- watchers to participate in his hikes and tours. They would certainly thoroughly enjoy these events with Dave. Many birders have experienced sightings and have photographed most of the rare and often endemic bird species in the Overberg on tours.
